If you've recently picked up a Sega Genesis, you're in for a treat. Whether you went the SNES route that generation or you're a new gamer looking for a ton of retro games on the cheap, here's where to start.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
There were three numbered Sonic the Hedgehog games on the Genesis, and the second one was the best. Many would say it's the peak for the entire franchise, in fact. It's hard for me to say whether the more recent handheld sidescrollers haven't topped it, in fact. Check it out on the Wii Virtual Console, or in the Sonic Mega Collection.

Toejam & Earl.
Toejam & Earl peaked in its first episode. These two characters are aliens who crash land on a completely wacked-out version of Earth, which is presented as though from the aliens' point of view. Threats on Earth range from fat guys with lawnmowers to teleporting ice cream trucks. A must play rogue-like. Check it out on the Wii Virtual Console.

Warsong.
Warsong might be a little obscure. It's a turn-based strategy game that works a lot like Advance Wars with a fantasy setting. The music is fantastic, and the gameplay is extremely tight and challenging. It's too bad the rest of the Langrisser franchise remained in Japan.

Earthworm Jim.
This excellent platformer by Shiny broke a lot of rules with its presentation and style, and it still rocks to this day. Hero Jim is an earthworm in a man-shaped super suit, which uses Jim's body as a whip to attack or grab onto things. The game has an incredibly bizarre sense of humor, as well.

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.
Mean Bean Machine is really a licensed reworking of Puyo Puyo with a Sonic spinoff theme. Nonetheless, it retains all the charm and challenge of Puyo Puyo, which is a Dr. Mario-like puzzle game with little colorful gobs that stick to each other as they fall from the top of the screen. Check it out on the Wii Virtual Console, or in Sonic Mega Collection.

Eternal Champions.
In an era where Street Fighter II claimed dominance over all other fighting games, there were pretenders. One that reached high for its day was Eternal Champions, a fighter that featured time-travelling characters with distinct fighting styles and an interesting taunt system. Check it out on the Wii Virtual Console.

Phantasy Star II
Perhaps the highest point of the classic RPG franchise Phantasy Star was its second episode. The game was amazing for its time, and the story was simply epic. Check it out on the Wii Virtual Console.

Shining Force
With Phantasy Star, Shining Force is considered another of Sega's excellent RPG franchises. Built by Camelot, who later went on to produce the Golden Sun RPGs for Game Boy Advance, Shining Force is not only a great game, but a rare one, commanding large sums of money on eBay.
