You've got a Wii! Well, thanks to 100% backwards compatibility, that means you've also got a Gamecube. Not a lot of RPGs on Wii just yet, so here's where to look.

Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean
Monolith Soft, the development studio behind Xenosaga, now belongs to Nintendo. When they were part of Namco, they produced this surprising RPG with a number of shocking plot twists and a brilliantly deep battle system that's disguised as a card game.

Baten Kaitos Origins
This sequel to Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean is actually a prequel, and it tells the story of how the original game's events were set up 20 years beforehand. The graphics and sound are even better than the original, but the battle system was changed in an unfortunate way.

Animal Crossing
Some might not consider Animal Crossing an RPG, but if it's not, then what is it? You buy a home, pay off debts, get a job... maybe it's a simulation, but it's one where you play the role of a good neighbor and good citizen of your little town, which makes it just enough RPG for this list.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
This sequel to the N64 classic RPG has even more charm and wit than the original, and an even better battle system. Surprising localizations are becoming more commonplace at Nintendo of America, and this is one of the best out there.

X-Men Legends
This Action-RPG is a quality fun multiplayer title, and unique on this list, it's multi-platform. Take on the role of your favorite heroes from the Marvel universe and unleash your fists or beams or whatever mutation was tossed your way.

Tales of Symphonia
Tales of Symphonia was an amazing game for its scope, if for nothing else. This RPG had some classy cel-shaded visuals, a real-time battle system that required a college degree to master and... a cooking system that required the purchase of ingredients and visits by the mysterious Wonder Chef. Not a game for everyone, but a big game.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
The origin of the recently popular Crystal Chronicles subset of Final Fantasy games was this misfit on Gamecube. A stellar game if you could get four people with Game Boy Advances to plug in, FFCC kind of foundered when played single-player, and it's a shame, because it looked and sounded incredible.

Skies of Arcadia Legends
A kind of "director's cut" of Skies of Arcadia on Dreamcast, Legends took a lot of things that had grown stale in Eastern RPGs and flipped them on their heads. A likeable pirate hero and his friends made the game great fun, and an easy weapon-upgrade system struck a great balance for those who just wanted to go a little deeper.

X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse
Legends' sequel did everything the original did just a little bit better, and as a result they stand up there together as some of the best experiences to be had on the platform, especially for fans of Marvel's X-Men.

Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II
Gamecube's only online RPG has a strong cult following, and not only because an exploit in the code allows the copying of Gamecube discs for those into the less legal aspect of gaming data management. Most will agree that the later PSO games can't touch this remaster of the Dreamcast original.
