Macs are great computers, and I prefer them to Windows machines. That said, there are some things you need to know before you buy one. Take a look.

A Mac is not a gaming PC.
Well, generally speaking, it's not. Most games don't come out for the Mac, so if you want to run them, you'll need Apple's newest version of the operating system, which is called Leopard. Using Leopard and a free program from Apple called Boot Camp, you can install and run Windows XP or Vista natively on your Mac, at which point, you can game adequately.

Lots of stuff you're used to might not be available for Mac.
There's a lot of great free software that I became accustomed to using in Windows that is just not made for the Mac platform. There are usually many alternatives, some of which are superior to those on Windows, but the simple fact is, the software is different, and you will need to adjust.

There's only one mouse button.
That isn't to say you can't use another button. You can buy a third party mouse with a right button, or even use your USB Windows mouse if you want (though it won't match, sigh) and the OS will understand the right-click as a context click just like it should, but the mouse that comes with your mac doesn't have physically isolated buttons.

Just about everything will work if it's USB.
Printers are an exception, but nearly anything you own that runs on USB will work with your Mac, which is handy. Back to the printer thing, you can often work around it. I have a Dell laser printer that only comes with Windows software, and I use a Samsung driver to print. The quality of the print is not great, but it gets me by. If you have a printer already and you want to use it on your Mac, make sure you look for a Mac driver on the manufacturer's website.

iPods work better on the Mac.
It might seem like a no-brainer to some people, but I was surprised that my iPod works so much better with my Mac than it did on my Windows PC. It never crashes anymore, it syncs in a fraction of the time, and I had just accepted those issues as part of the experience. Very nice.

Your friends will not understand.
I'm a reasonably tech-savvy person, and I've taken a lot of good-natured razzing for migrating to the Mac. Friends and family see your move to the Mac either as folly or, for some reason, a threat to their decision to tolerate Windows. Go figure.

MacOS is not the second coming.
As much as I love my Mac, and MacOS, I need to stress that the computer and its OS are not flawless. There are issues around the system that will cause trouble for you here and there, like when you have to mute and then unmute your sound to make it work sometimes. Minor irritants usually, but irritants nonetheless.
